“Tmavé Pivo” literally means “Dark Beer” in Czech, and it’s a bit of a rarity, even in its home country. Although overshadowed by world renowned Czech Pilsners, the Czech Dark Lager has been steadily growing in popularity for its rich, malty complexity that manages to deliver a balanced and refreshing experience. The ideal version should be slightly sweet with a light caramel flavor, a noticeably full body, and a healthy charge of Saaz hops for a bittering balance that delivers what the Czech brewers call “pitelnost,” meaning “drinkability.” To get the body to stand up to the fullness of the dark malts and bitterness of the Saaz hops, we crafted a 13o wort (degrees Plato is the standard measurement for the density of brewers wort)

Confluence - Blackberry Apricot Wizard
Style: Fruited Sour

When humans first began brewing beer, the science behind fermentation was not well understood and probably seemed a bit like magic. We now know that around 1000 AD in Goslar, in present day Germany, lactic producing bacteria from the grain and air combined with the salinity of their local water source to help the brewers produce a tart, refreshing brew that we call Gose (GO-zuh). In conjuring up a plan for this beer, we honored that natural sort of magic by culturing lactobacillus to quickly sour the whole batch. The resulting brew retains the magic of the original, with a citrus-like tartness and minerality that awakens and refreshes your palate with each sip.

Confluence - Capitol Gold

Glowing like the Iowa Capitol dome in Iowa’s capital city, Des Moines, this golden lager is brewed with time-honored German brewing methods. Its slightly sweet, bready, malty flavor is balanced perfectly by traditional German noble hops with medium-low hop bitterness. Like building the magnificent 23-karat gold leaf Iowa Capitol dome itself, this beer can’t be rushed. We create it with the finest domestic and imported German two-row barley malt and noble German hops as well as traditional lager yeast. This delicate beauty undergoes a lagering period of three to four weeks after initial fermentation to bring out the best this beer has to offer. The result is a beer which, much like Iowa, has something for everyone — satisfying to the experienced craft beer drinker, yet welcoming to those new to the world of craft beer.

Confluence - Farmer John's Multi-Grain Ale
Style: Blond Ale

When most people think of Iowa, they picture flowing fields of grain for miles and miles. Created by a third-generation farm boy, Farmer John’s Multi-Grain Ale is amber waves of grain in a glass. A refreshing, blonde ale, it features a base of two row American barley malt along with a large portion of wheat malt, a small dose of rye malt and un-malted oats, corn and wheat. Lightly hopped with English East Kent Goldings hops chosen for their subtle, earthy qualities and finished with Czech Saaz hops for their sweet, floral essence to create a beer that’s light in body and color, with a velvety texture and an aroma as sweet as a freshly cut field of hay. Farmer John’s captures the endless bounty of Iowa in an easy-drinking, blonde ale.

Ever since we first fired up the boil kettle we’ve been dreaming of producing a beer that was 100% Iowan. So when our new friends at Black Gold Malt Farm near Cascade malted their first batch of Iowa-grown barley, we had everything we needed to make our dream a reality. Their barley forms the backbone of this crisp, clean, and brilliant Kolsch style beer, further enhanced by the addition of Sweet Success honey harvested outside of Winterset. Triple Pearl hops grown by Bobst Hop Farms near Runnells create a gentle aroma of melon and clementine with a touch of balanced bitterness. A collaborative effort between four local businesses, this beer is made by Iowans, for Iowans–and that makes us as happy as a pig in... well... Iowa.

Confluence - Light & Squeezy

Radler may mean cyclist in German, but you definitely don’t have to be a cyclist to enjoy one. And while it may be true that this incredibly refreshing beer and fruit soda hybrid tastes its best after you finish some sort of activity that leaves you drenched in sweat, we promise it still tastes pretty darn awesome when you’ve been sitting in the air conditioning all day. We crafted this all-rounder by brewing up a Kolsch for an ultra light, ultra clean, and ultra crisp base to mix with a big ol' pile of juicy raspberries and some house-made lemon soda. A little tart, a little jammy, and a little sweet, we promise no law dictates that you can only drink one after a pulse-pounding workout. In fact, we recommend keeping a four-pack on hand so you can get your claws on one when the mood strikes. Cheers!

Confluence - Oatmeal Cookie Stout

We might have debuted our Oatmeal Cookie Stout at our 6th anniversary, but anytime is the right time for a cookie so we’ve whipped up another batch! Hundreds of pounds of oats went into the mash kettle alongside a variety of chocolate and caramel malts to generate that sweet backbone you expect from any cookie worth its crumbles. Speaking of sweet, this time we teamed up with One Sweet Kitchen here in Des Moines and added dozens of their delicious oatmeal cookies directly to the mash! Of course a good cookie isn’t just about feeling its oats, so we liberally dosed the batch with vanilla and cinnamon to give it that freshly baked appeal. Grab a pint and a four pack, one sip will have you feeling like one smart cookie. Cheers!

Confluence - Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest beer was originally brewed to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig (destined to become King Ludwig I) to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on 12 October 1810. Flash forward more than two centuries and Oktoberfest is a personal favorite of head brewer, John Martin, who celebrated his marriage to Katie by buying homebrew equipment on their honeymoon … in October. We used plenty of German Munich and Vienna malt as well as CaraMunich malt to five this beer its rich, amber color and full-bodied, toasty flavor. Celebrate your favorite occasion with a mug of this delicious fall brew.

Confluence head brewer John Martin set out to create a distinctive summer beer that is light, refreshing and flavorful. John started with Belgian two-row pilsner malt, cara-blonde and a little wheat malt and American Ale yeast. The not-so-secret ingredient is an intentionally light touch of Citra hops, just enough to inject light bittering flavor via whirlpool and dry-hopping but not so much as to inhibit drinkability. Named in honor of Confluence Brewing’s location on the south side of Des Moines
